A dapper man bent down and picked up a penny off the cobblestone walkway. A young girl gasped softly as she ducked into a nearby alley. She watched in suspence as the man turned the penny over and over in his hands. That was all the money that her mother had given her for the day and she had been instructed to take it to the baker's shop that afternoon. If she was short by even one penny by the time she reached her shop, she would not have enough to buy any food. The man paused for a moment before dropping the penny neatly into his coat pocket. The little girl watched in horror as the man drew his hand out of his pocket. She was about to leave when it appeared as though something had dropped from the man's hand. She turned to look and saw something hit the ground where the man had been standing. A dollar-coin rolled across the cobblestone and stopped at the toe of the girl's worn shoe. She bent down to hold it in her hands as her eyes lit up. In her excitment, she did not notice the man, sitting on a park bench who watched her run down to the baker's shop with a sly smile on his face and a penny in his pocket.
